Sociologia da violência

Faz em breve 40 anos que a revolução portuguesa sinalizou o início de um ciclo democrático para o Sul da Europa e para a América Latina, que haveria de anteceder a queda do Muro de Berlim – em nome da liberdade. Volta agora a recordar-se as opções que foram derrotadas pelo caminho percorrido (os não-alinhados, a lusofonia, a sociedade sem classes), quando a representatividade política das oligarquias instaladas é contestada nas ruas, as polícias carregam manifestantes e políticos avisados falam dos riscos de a Europa voltar a ser campo de batalha entre as suas potências.

As ideias de que a União Europeia seria um garante da paz e de que a sociologia poderia dispensar atender ao estado bélico que as sociedades por vezes tomam, remeteram a sociologia da violência para a inexistência ou, quanto muito, para a criminologia.

Este curso propõe apresentar a grande diversidade de violências com que a sociedade se constrói e destrói, quotidianamente ou revolucionariamente, e discutir, ao mesmo tempo, de que modo o jejum de violência transtornou a teoria social e os modos de recuperar de tal entorse.  

Sociology of Violence

The beginning of a democratic cycle for Southern Europe and Latino America began with Portuguese Revolution, almost forty years now.  It would be the biggest western civilization event before the fall of Berlin wall, all seeking freedom. The spirit of the time, these days, recalls defeat options, such as non-aligned movements, Portuguese tongue commonwealth, and classless society as open options to regain confidence against the impoverishment policies. Oligarch in charge is confronted with evident lack of democratic legitimacy, and the power of the streets. Police are called to charge against pacific demonstrators.

The idea that European Union would be the warrant for peace in Europe and social theory could avoid dealing with the war social status that happens elsewhere, show why sociology of violence did not present itself as a sub-discipline and why it hide itself in criminology science community.  

The present course will present the diversity of violent situations and the way they build and destroy societies – every day or in a revolutionary way. We will discuss, along with it, the way social theory lack to integrate violence calls in the mainstream references and ways of recover from that limitation.
