STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF AN INDUSTRY:APPLIED TO THE PORTUGUESE FASTENERS INDUSTRY

Abstract

The objective of the present study is to perceive the structural strategic determinants of the intensity of competition on the portuguese fasteners industry. On that purpose, is applied the structural analysis method of an industry, proposed by Michael Porter.

Starting at the formulated hypothesis (verification of Porter's method), we applied the "five forces model" to the portuguese fasteners industry. Before the model appliance, it was done an approach to the institutional, normative and historical context of the industry, completed with an strategic analysis to the main variables identified in its activity.

With the use of this method, the reasons subjacent to the five forces, are analysed: the threat of new entrants, the rivalry among the competitors, the threat of the substitutes, bargaining power of buyers and bargaining power of suppliers.
