Overcoming common critical mistakes in decision-making: the web based qualitative MACBETH socio-technical approach
Professor Carlos Bana e Costa, Universidade de Lisboa

Abstract:
Faced with the difficult task of balancing benefits, costs and risks, managers frequently incur in critical mistakes of analysis. After highlighting the most common ones, it is suggested how to avoid them and make better decisions, by following the MACBETH socio-technical approach. Several examples are given on how MACBETH helps to compare options and weight evaluation criteria based only on the elicitation of qualitative judgments of difference in value. Concerning recent developments in a web-based environment, a case-study is presented to show that the approach allows the asynchronous involvement of a high number of participants, in complement or alternative to face-to-face decision conferencing workshops.
